8 Percentage of List Method ISP Threshold Method This conserva ve method relies strictly on calcula ng percentages of your overall list – star ng at 1%, and gradually increasing over a 30-day period to 25% of your total database size (or the propor on of the list you plan to send to in a typical week). The idea here is to increase volume sent slowly but surely. There is no point in overshoo ng your average weekly send rate since the warming window is a 30-day moving target. It will adjust. Since this method takes longer to reach high sending volumes, it can be more cost prohibi ve if you are relying on outsourced help. This method uses the known/accepted threshold levels that the various ISPs will accept. Since the largest ISPs generally account for about 25% of a typical mailing list, many are comfortable sending 20,000 messages per day out of the gate without concern of hi ng ISP thresholds (the lowest known being AOL at 5000 to start). From there, methods vary in aggressiveness from doubling every 2-3 days, to increasing by a smaller percentage every 2-3 days, to doubling each week un l the full list size is reached. With this more aggressive method, the only me you stop increasing is if you reach unacceptably high deferral and block rates (bounce rates, spam complaint rates or unsubscribe rates). Otherwise, as long as you are regularly sending, you can con nue increasing at regular intervals. If you stop sending for a week you will need to stay at the previous level for a couple more days before increasing as most ISPs do not recognize the me period you were not sending as part of the warm-up period. Ramp Up Schedule Methods We have seen equally successful results with both conserva ve and aggressive approaches, assuming you are working with emails from people who have explicitly opted-in to your communica ons. The more empha c "Of course!" reac on you had to that last sentence, the be er your list quality most likely is. As a result, you will likely have a successful IP warming experience regardless of the approach you take. 8
